When to apply
  • A PESCI is arranged by the doctor with an AMC accredited provider once a position has been offered and the Medical Board has indicated a PESCI is required; providers run sessions through the year with waits of several weeks.
When interviews run
  • Any month; the PESCI is scheduled by the provider, and registration for the position cannot be granted until a pass is reported.
The format
  • A series of clinical scenarios relevant to the position, each with structured questions and usually reading time, lasting from about forty minutes to over an hour depending on the provider.
Who is on the panel
  • Two or three experienced general practitioners accredited by the provider, with a chair.
How it is scored
  • Each scenario scored against set criteria: assessment, management, safety, communication and the limits of the role; a pass is required for the Medical Board to grant registration for the position.
What to prepare
  • The common general practice presentations with the Australian guidelines and referral pathways.
  • Safety netting for every scenario: what you would tell the patient and when you would see them again.
  • The emergencies a practice must recognise and refer: chest pain, the septic child, the suicidal patient, the urgent result.
  • Medicare, bulk billing, the PBS and the state's notifiable conditions and prescription monitoring, in plain words.
