How to answer

One specific example per question, your actions and the outcome clear, a line of reflection. Include what the nurses or allied health staff contributed. Show you can follow as well as lead.

  • STAR Situation in a sentence, Task: what you had to do, Action: what you did in the first person, Result: the outcome with a number where there is one. Add Reflection for STARR. Full guide →
  1. Asked in most interviewsUsually asked by the head of departmentSTARR

Describe a time you worked effectively in a multidisciplinary team. What was your contribution?

STAR with your contribution clear and the other professions named: what the nurses, physiotherapists or pharmacist contributed and what the team needed from you. A line on what you learned about following well finishes it.

  2. Asked in most interviewsUsually asked by the head of departmentSTARR

Describe a situation where you showed leadership.

An example where you took charge at your level: an arrest call before the registrar arrived, a ward in chaos, a roster gap. What you decided, how you communicated it, the outcome, and what you would do differently.

  3. Asked in most interviewsUsually asked by the people and cultureSTARR

Describe a conflict you had with a colleague or senior, and how you resolved it.

A real conflict addressed early and in private, focused on the issue and the patient rather than the person, with the outcome and the relationship afterwards. With a senior, show respect for their experience alongside your concern.

  4. Often askedUsually asked by the staff specialist colleagueSTARR

Tell us about a time you supported a junior colleague who was struggling.

Noticed early, asked privately, found out what was going on, offered practical help, and involved the supervisor or term supervisor if needed. Say what happened to the colleague and what you learned.

  5. Often askedUsually asked by the head of departmentSTARR

How do you work with nursing and allied health staff when there is disagreement about a plan?

Hear the disagreement out, look at the patient together, decide on clinical grounds and explain your reasoning. If they were right, say so. Describe one real example and how the relationship was afterwards.

  6. Often askedUsually asked by the staff specialist colleagueSTARR

Tell us about a time you had to delegate or prioritise work across a team.

An example where you delegated with clear instructions and checked it was done, or prioritised across a team under pressure. Say what you kept for yourself and why.
