When to apply
  • Trust grade, clinical fellow and specialty doctor posts are advertised through the year on NHS Jobs, with most windows two to four weeks.
  • Agencies also recruit for these posts and host the interviews on the trust's behalf.
When interviews run
  • Interviews are usually within two to four weeks of the closing date, online in most cases.
  • Offers can follow within days, subject to GMC registration and pre employment checks.
The format
  • A single panel interview of 20 to 40 minutes, usually online.
  • Four to eight questions: motivation, the NHS, a clinical scenario in two parts, an ethical question, and behavioural examples.
Who is on the panel
  • Two to four people: the clinical lead or a consultant in the department, a second consultant, and sometimes HR or the rota coordinator.
How it is scored
  • Scored against the person specification by each panel member; the clinical scenario and the ethical question are weighted heavily.
  • Answers are expected at the level of the grade applied for, with early escalation scored explicitly.
What to prepare
  • A two minute summary of your experience aimed at the post.
  • Real reasons for the NHS and this trust, with something specific you found out.
  • The deteriorating patient scenario with an SBAR handover rehearsed.
  • A definition of clinical governance with an example of each part from your practice.
  • Your plans for GMC registration, exams and the next step, stated plainly.
